When we think of the word ‘anti-aging’, the first thing that comes to mind is anti-aging products. Americans spend a substantial amount of money on anti-aging products. According to experts, the skincare market is worth more than 1.1 billion.
Unfortunately, many men and women spend less money on their health and nutrition. Some people fail to realize that diet plays a major role in how fast (or slow) the skin will age. Here are three major diet mistakes to avoid:
Mistake #1: Eating or Drinking Too Much Refined Sugar
When it comes to refined sugar, you not only wear it on your hips, it can literally add years to your face. One of the biggest myths is that doing cardio workouts and weight training can keep you looking young regardless of what you eat. Exercising on a regular basis may help keep you in shape but it won’t provide you with the anti-aging benefits good nutrition has to offer.
What type of foods will help slow down the aging process? Foods with natural ingredients (not man-made ingredients) can help slow down the aging process. For example, fresh strawberries are known to help enhance the production of collagen fibers. This is what helps keep your skin looking firm and smooth.
Unhealthy food choices, such as cakes, cookies, soda, sugary drinks and other sugar-filled foods can weaken elastin and deplete the collagen that keeps your skin looking healthy.
Mistake #2: Not Drinking Enough Pure Water
What does drinking 7-8 glasses of pure water have to do with having youthful skin? Skin is your largest organ, and it needs to be hydrated. Drinking a lot of pure water not only hydrates the skin, it flushes out toxins that result in bad skin. If you don’t like drinking 8 glasses of water daily, you can “eat” your water. There are many fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of water, such as the following:
- Iceberg lettuce
- Sweet peppers
Fried foods = bad skin. I think we all agree that most fried foods have very little nutritional value, and are high in calories and fat.
Eating too many fried foods not only contributes to hypertension and many other illnesses, it can wreak havoc on your skin. If you want to keep your skin looking soft and youthful, stay away from fried foods at all costs. Remember, you can’t cover up bad skin.
Lastly, buying expensive ointments and anti-aging creams have their place, but if you want to help them be even more effective, there’s nothing like practicing good nutrition. Eating healthy foods and drinking plenty of water keeps you looking and feeling young from the inside out.
So, add another resolution to your list: Eat foods that Mother Nature created. She really does know best.
