Don’t FREAK-OUT on Holiday Cheer! How to Keep the Frenzy From Zapping Your Health

In the midst of the holiday season, we scramble and scurry about with the intention of making our festivities as perfect as can be. That goal may cause a load of stress that may run your spirits dry – if you are not mindful of how stress can affect your health. Stress-related anxiety and depression are not uncommon – affecting more than 30% of the population (Science Daily, Oct 2011).
Let your holiday season be as joyful as possible - without letting stress get in the way.
We all need a certain level of stress. At best, it keeps us stimulated and on our toes.
While under stress, our body produces the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which lifts our mood and stimulates our brain to learn and adapt (The Franklin Institute, 2004). However, long-term stress can breed all kinds of illness and disease, especially if you haven’t developed good coping skills. When the body is under stress, it releases a hormone called ‘cortisol.’ The chronic release of this chemical may also lead to weight gain. If you’re not taking care of your health to begin with, you’re making your health extra vulnerable to the detriments of stress (ACSM’s Health Fitness Journal, University New Mexico, 2005).
Perhaps one of the best gifts you can give to yourself this year is good stress management. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage, try a Yoga class, explore meditation, pray… do whatever it is that will make you feel grounded again. Taking care of your health in general will give your body a good defense when faced with stress. Be sure to keep a well-balanced diet and take a good multivitamin, especially when you’re constantly on the run.
GABA (Gama-Amino-butyric acid) is a good supplement to try to lift your mood and buffer stress. SAM-e (S-adenosylmethionine) helps you to produce dopamine and serotonin, the neurotransmitters responsible for making you feel good (Life Extension, 2011). Lastly, exercise can be a great outlet for stress and anxiety – find one you truly enjoy and you’ll get more from it.
Rather than aim for a picture perfect holiday, perhaps your goal this year should be to make it as joyful as can be. After all, that’s what makes celebrations worthwhile. As you trim the tree this season, be sure to trim the stress as well.
